About Australia

Australia is the longest and most expensive trip on this list, and the distances inside the country surprise people — Sydney to Cairns is a three-hour flight. Twelve days covers the east coast; adding Uluru or Perth needs more. Book domestic flights at the same time as international to keep the total manageable.

Highlights

Sydney Opera House and Bondi; Great Barrier Reef at Cairns; Great Ocean Road; Uluru; Melbourne laneways

Things to do in Australia

Our picks, with what each one costs and how long it takes.

Great Barrier Reef ₹12,000 · full day

Great Barrier Reef

The largest living structure on earth. Day boats from Cairns reach the outer reef in 90 minutes; introductory dives need no certification. Stinger suits May–November.

Sydney Opera House

Utzon's sail-shell roof up close is tiled, not white — a detail you only see in person. The one-hour interior tour beats photographing it from Circular Quay.

Uluru at sunrise

The 348-metre monolith shifting through ochre to deep red as the sun comes up. Climbing has been banned since 2019; the 10 km base walk is the respectful way to see it.

Bondi to Coogee walk

Six kilometres of clifftop path past five beaches and an ocean pool at Icebergs. Free, takes two hours, and is the best thing to do in Sydney at no cost.

🚌 Transportation

Distances are the defining fact: Sydney to Cairns is a three-hour flight, Sydney to Perth is five. Book domestic flights (Jetstar, Virgin, Qantas) at the same time as your international ticket. Sydney and Melbourne have excellent public transport using Opal and Myki cards. The Great Ocean Road and the red centre need a rental car; distances between fuel stops are long, so fill up whenever you can.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Eating out is expensive — a casual meal is ₹1,200–₹2,200, coffee ₹300. Supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths) and food courts are how to control costs. Australia has outstanding Asian and Indian food in every city, often the best value available. Tipping is not expected. Bringing food into the country is heavily restricted — declare everything on arrival or face on-the-spot fines.

🏨 Best Hotels

Sydney: Circular Quay for the icons, Surry Hills for restaurants, Bondi for the beach. Cairns: the esplanade. Uluru: Yulara resort is the only option and books out months ahead. Serviced apartments cost less than hotels for families and include kitchens.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Very safe from crime; the hazards are natural and frequently underestimated. Swim only between the red and yellow flags — rip currents drown swimmers every year. Sun is severe: the UV index reaches extreme levels and burns take under 15 minutes. Respect warnings about crocodiles in northern Queensland waterways and marine stingers (November–May, when stinger suits are needed on the reef). Never underestimate outback distances or drive at dusk when kangaroos move.
