🚌 Transportation
Domestic flights (Cairo–Luxor–Aswan) cost ₹3,000–₹6,000 and save long journeys. Overnight sleeper trains between Cairo and Aswan are an experience but slow. In Cairo, Uber and Careem are cheap, reliable and remove all haggling — use them rather than street taxis. Most visitors use a guided package for the Nile portion, which is genuinely the practical choice given site logistics and heat.
🍽️ Best Restaurants
Koshari — the national rice-lentil-pasta dish — is vegetarian, filling and costs ₹60–₹120. Ful, taameya (falafel), shawarma and grilled meats are everywhere. Restaurant meals run ₹300–₹800. Vegetarians do well thanks to Coptic fasting traditions. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice and raw salads outside good hotels; stomach upsets are the most common complaint.
🏨 Best Hotels
Giza for pyramid views from your balcony, Zamalek for a leafy central district with restaurants, Downtown for budget. Luxor: the East Bank for convenience, the West Bank for quiet and balloon access. Nile cruise boats serve as hotel and transport for 3–4 nights.
🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips
Tourist areas are heavily policed and serious crime against visitors is rare, but persistent hustling is guaranteed and exhausting. Agree every price beforehand — camel rides, guides, 'free' gifts and photos all end in demands. Use licensed guides only. Avoid North Sinai entirely. Women travelling alone report frequent harassment; modest dress and a firm manner help. Heat at Luxor exceeds 40°C from May to September — start at dawn.
