🚌 Transportation

The Octopus card is essential — it works on the MTR, buses, ferries, trams and in shops. The MTR reaches almost everything and is fast, cheap and signed in English. The Star Ferry and the double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island are transport and sightseeing at once, both for pocket change. The Airport Express takes 24 minutes to Central.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Dim sum is the ritual — a full breakfast for two runs ₹800–₹1,500. Cha chaan teng diners serve milk tea and noodles for ₹250–₹450. Michelin-starred street food exists at genuinely low prices. Vegetarians should look for Buddhist vegetarian restaurants, which are excellent, as most standard dishes use pork or oyster sauce.

🏨 Best Hotels

Tsim Sha Tsui for harbour views and value, Central and Sheung Wan for nightlife and walkability, Causeway Bay for shopping. Rooms are famously tiny — a 15 sqm room at ₹8,000 is normal. Mong Kok offers the cheapest beds.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Very safe with low street crime, and efficient emergency services. Pickpocketing occurs in crowded markets like Mong Kok. Note the political situation: avoid photographing or joining any protest, and be careful about political commentary — the National Security Law is enforced. Typhoon season runs May to November; when signal 8 is raised, everything closes and you should stay indoors. Complete the pre-arrival registration before flying — it is free but mandatory.
