Mauritius

6 days

Best time to visit: May to December, the cooler dry season. January–March carries cyclone risk.

About Mauritius

Mauritius is a long-standing honeymoon choice from India for good reason: free visa on arrival, direct flights, a large Indian-origin population, and lagoons calm enough for non-swimmers. Six days lets you split the north coast and the wilder south rather than staying put at one resort.

Highlights

Île aux Cerfs; Chamarel seven-coloured earth and waterfall; Black River Gorges; Port Louis market; catamaran and dolphin trips

  • Grand Bassin sacred lake and its Shiva statue

🚌 Transportation

Public buses are very cheap (₹20–₹40) and reach most of the island, but they are slow and stop early in the evening. Renting a car is the standard choice at ₹2,000–₹3,000 a day — driving is on the left, as in India, which makes it easy for Indian visitors. Taxis are expensive and should be negotiated per day rather than per trip. The island is small: nowhere is more than 90 minutes away.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Mauritian food blends Indian, Creole, Chinese and French traditions — dholl puri (₹40 for two) is the beloved street snack, and rougaille, vindaye and octopus curry are staples. Indian travellers will find the flavours familiar; a large Hindu population means vegetarian food and temple prasad are everywhere. Restaurant mains cost ₹600–₹1,200; street food is a fraction of that.

🏨 Best Hotels

Grand Baie for restaurants and boat trips, Flic en Flac for sunsets and diving, Belle Mare for the finest beaches, Le Morne for kitesurfing and luxury. All-inclusive resorts dominate but self-catering apartments cost far less and let you eat local.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Safe and easy, with a warm welcome for Indian visitors and Hindi or Bhojpuri widely understood. Petty theft from beaches and rental cars is the main issue — leave nothing visible. Swim between flags; some lagoons look calm but have channel currents. Cyclone season runs January to March, occasionally closing the airport. Tap water is drinkable in most areas but bottled is safer for short trips.
