Best time to visit: October to November for the clearest mountain views; March–April for rhododendron season. Avoid the June–September monsoon.

About Nepal

Nepal is the cheapest international trip an Indian traveller can take — no visa, no currency hassle, and fares from Delhi that regularly land near ₹17,000 return. Kathmandu and Pokhara make an easy first week; trekking permits for Annapurna or Everest Base Camp need more time and preparation than a standard holiday allows.

Highlights

Kathmandu Durbar Square and Pashupatinath; Pokhara and Phewa Lake; Nagarkot sunrise over the Himalaya; Everest scenic flight; Chitwan safari

🚌 Transportation

Roads are slow and winding: Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 km but takes 6–7 hours by tourist bus (₹800–₹1,500) or 25 minutes by plane (₹6,000–₹9,000). Domestic flights are worth it if your time is short, though they cancel readily in cloud. In cities, taxis are unmetered — negotiate, or use Pathao and inDrive. Indian currency is widely accepted, but ₹500 and ₹2,000 notes are officially not.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Dal bhat is the national plate — rice, lentils, vegetables, with free refills, for ₹200–₹400. Momos are everywhere and cost ₹100–₹200. Thakali cuisine is the standout. Newari food in Kathmandu is worth seeking out. Indian travellers will find the food familiar and mild. Drink only bottled or filtered water.

🏨 Best Hotels

Kathmandu: Thamel for convenience and noise, Boudha for calm and Tibetan atmosphere, Patan for heritage. Pokhara: Lakeside is where everything is. Guesthouses cost ₹1,000–₹2,500; good hotels ₹3,500–₹6,000.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Low crime, and Indians need no visa. Real concerns are altitude (anything above 3,000 m needs acclimatisation — Everest Base Camp treks are a separate, longer trip), road accidents on mountain highways, and air pollution in Kathmandu during winter. Trekking alone is discouraged; register your route. Load-shedding and water shortages still occur. Earthquake risk is real — know your hotel's exits.
