Best time to visit: May to September for long daylight hours and mild weather. December brings Christmas markets and short days.

About United Kingdom

The UK needs its own visa on top of any Schengen plans, so treat it as a separate trip rather than an add-on. Eight days covers London properly plus either Scotland or the southwest. Rail fares drop sharply when booked weeks ahead — advance tickets are the single biggest saving available.

Highlights

Westminster and the Tower of London; British Museum; Scottish Highlands and Edinburgh; Stonehenge and Bath; Lake District

🚌 Transportation

London's Tube takes contactless cards and phones directly — no Oyster needed, and daily fares cap automatically. Intercity trains are excellent but expensive at the last minute: advance tickets booked weeks ahead cost a third of walk-up fares, and a Railcard pays for itself in two journeys. Buses (National Express, Megabus) are far cheaper and slower. Driving is on the left with congestion charges in London.

🍽️ Best Restaurants

Pub meals cost ₹1,200–₹2,000; meal deals from supermarkets ₹400. Britain's Indian food is genuinely good — Southall and Wembley in London, and curry houses in every town. Free museum entry and cheap supermarket lunches are how to keep this trip affordable. Tap water is free in restaurants; ask for it.

🏨 Best Hotels

London: zones 2–3 near a Tube line for value (Hammersmith, Greenwich, Bethnal Green). Central hotel rooms are small and start at ₹12,000. Edinburgh: the Old Town for atmosphere but book early, especially around the August festival when prices triple.

🛡️ Safety & Travel Tips

Safe overall, with the usual big-city precautions. Phone snatching from mopeds is a real problem in central London — do not stand at kerbsides using your phone. Pickpocketing occurs on the Tube and around Oxford Street. Weather changes fast and daylight is short in winter (dark by 4pm in December). Carry your passport or a copy; check the current UK visa processing time before booking flights.
